The game of Video Poker starts when the bettor inserts credits (whether it is tokens, credit slips or cash) into the machine and pushes the draw button. A five card hand will be electronically ‘handed out’ on the video screen.

The Video Poker game also has buttons with ‘hold’ printed on them, and enthusiasts will need to now decide which cards to keep and which to throw away. After the bettor has chosen which cards she wishes to keep, the player will then press ‘deal’, which will mean that any new cards will be needed they will be dealt. The hand is now completed, with the Electronic Poker machine analyzing the cards to see if it is the same as any of the winning hands shown on the payment schedule.

Generally, the minimum winning hand on an Electronic Poker machine is a pair of jacks with the award money growing for each better hand. A list of common winning hands begins with jacks or better, and moves on to 2 pairs, three of a kinds, straights, flushes, full houses, 4 of a kinds, straight flushes and last but not least royal flushes. It definitely goes without saying that the payment schedule can range from machine to machine, so that experienced players are agile enough to select the most beneficial machine every time.

After the first round has finished, the player can either choose to remain on and try to to maximize their winnings, or they can press the ‘collect’ button to retrieve any credits that might been won. Further, some styles of the game allow the player an opportunity to double their profits, in which case a further hand is played. There are also differences between individual machines, with some virtual decks having wild cards and other varying aspects to increase playability.
